How much of the yoke is supposed to be in contact with the transmission shaft? I bought a driveshaft from a guy off of tech that was supposed to be for a th400 to 9" combo for a f body and I'm thinking its too short. There is about 2" of the yoke out of the trans once installed and the yoke length is about 3 1/4".

Another question I have if it's too short, can I use another yoke and have the yoke cut down to fit? My uncle gave me a yoke that doesn't look nearly as heavy duty as the one that's on there but its over 6" long and on the inside there is about an inch or so where there is no spline.

The correct way to check it is to slide the trans yoke all the way into the trans. Pull it out no more than an inch to make contact with the pinion yoke.

There's about 1 3/4" before it makes contact....

Is that with the rear end at ride height?

Front wheels are on ramps the rear has jackstands underneath the axle tubes.

I actually took another look at it and it's 2 1/2" until the 1350 u joint ends come in contact with the rear.

The yoke that goes to the output shaft is 3 1/4" and the there is 3/4" that doesn't have any spline. So it's effectively 2 1/2". There is 2" that doesn't go into the trans, but the output shaft sticks out 1/2". So that leaves me with an 1" of total engagement.

I need to put a new tube in it or install a longer yoke. The other yoke I have isn't as heavy duty and it's too long. I'm guessing another tube is what it's going to have to be

I would go with another tube. I dont like the long yokes.
