Hey guys. Long story short- stock bottom, heads/cam car LS1 based. T56 car originally, want to switch to an auto. I haven't been able to get a clear answer on which transmission I should go with an why. If you vote, drop a message saying why you chose that specific transmission for my setup.

Goal is eventually going to be a "9 second street car", LS3 based, FI or N20. I have a company truck I drive during the week. The T/A is my primary car otherwise and see's city and highway driving on the weekends. Car is full weight now, and will probably never be too much lighter considering a 6pt cage, etc will be added to offset any weight reduction.

Any questions ask. Choices are TH350, TH400, Powerglide, 4L60e, 4L80e. My car is a 1998 car, so if I went with 4L80e, I would have to swap to a 99+ PCM and what not. Still researching what needs to be done with that.

Thanks for looking,
Andy

I voted for TH350 as it seems to be a transmission that can grow (be modified) with your needs. I think all transmission vendors market versions of the TH350. I personally like the Powerglide, but it's only having two gears makes for tough street use.

My vote would be for a TH700R4, but that is not on your list. If you must put an auto trans in your manual trans car this is the best all around trans for a street car. This gives you better low gears and an overdrive gear for the highway. They are still fairly inexpensive compaired to 4L60E, 4L65E and 4L80E. Can be built with or without lock up and plenty of selection for converters.

Even if you go with a 4L60E you have to change out control modules for a TCM.

I run a th350 in my f-bod and LOVE it. I think you are nuts though with your goals for this car. Here's some of your post:

Goal is eventually going to be a "9 second street car", ................The T/A is my primary car otherwise and see's city and highway driving on the weekends

So..................your daily driver is going to be a 9-second car that cruises on the thruway? I'm not saying it isn't possible, because it has been done before, but you should pick up a little beater car. Cruiseing on the thruway at 3000rpm going 60mph in a 3-speed auto gets really old for extended periods of time. If it has a big stall in it, it will rev higher than that just going 60mph as well. In my eyes, it's just added wear and tear on the motor that you spent a lot of money on. You should look into an overdrive transmission, but they aren't cheap at all (when built right), and neither are converters for them.
