I have an aftermarket tank connected to the factory EVAP system in a GTO. GTO is pretty normal except that the canister is located below the tank. Purge solenoid is near the intake manifold and vent solenoid is in the right rear fender.

My setup will allow an overfill of the tank to go into the EVAP canister, which is precisely what happened. Even more fun is the fact that the excess fuel actually began siphoning out through the vent solenoid. You've got to love vertical fuel tanks. I'm going to get a liquid / vapor separator, probably from a Hyundai, to prevent this from happing in the future.

Anyhow, down to the problem. I can use my scan tool to manually open the purge solenoid while driving, in an effort to suck the vapors out of an obviously saturated canister. However, monitoring injector data in closed loop indicates that the solenoid only stays open for a short time when commanded open. This was confirmed by repeatedly commanding the purge on and off. This is where more expertise in GM EVAP systems is needed, as I have no idea whether this is normal or not. At this rate, I'll be older and grayer before I can ever get the canister back to normal, if that's even possible. Some have said the carbon gets ruined by liquid fuel. Others say it will be just fine once thoroughly purged. I could force air through it if need be. Anybody got a match?
